The Influence of Organizational Culture in Teaching Statistics and Finance

Stephen Bury Richter, West Chester University

ABSTRACT
The main focus of this paper is the influence of organizational culture when using the racetrack betting markets as a vehicle for experiential learning although cultural influences can also be studied for other sports applications such as baseball. The horse racing case is a particularly potent one to choose because of the gambling aspect and the so called horse players "sub culture". Since gambling plays a central role in the sport of horse racing (as well as investments because of horse ownership and breeding), the horse racing case can be used to assess cultural influences in the study of finance as well as statistics.
