Conducting Free Online Surveys in an Undergraduate Statistics Class

Joan M. Donohue, University of South Carolina

ABSTRACT
Undergraduate students are becoming more and more resistant to conducting paper-based surveys for class projects. They prefer using web-based survey tools that respondents can complete on-line or in-person using a tablet or phone. Many free online survey tools are available and seven of them (FreeOnlineSurveys.com, Google.com/Forms/about, KwikSurveys.com, SurveyGizmo.com, SurveyMonkey.com, QuestionPro.com, and Zoomerang.com) will be discussed along with their features. Sample selection, particularly how to suggest that students obtain simple random samples when conducting web-based surveys, will be addressed. Lastly, advantages and disadvantages of using online surveys will be discussed.
